Victor Tam
Victor Tam is the Founder, Chairman and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia. He is also the founder of the Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia, the Hong Kong Youth Wind Philharmonia which he serves as Music Director and conductor.
After graduating from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Mr. Tam was awarded a Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship to study at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in America, where he was recipient of the "Oboe Artistry Award". He then furthered his graduate studies at the Indiana University School of Music with a full scholarship as an Associate Instructor.
Mr. Tam’s oboe teachers include Marc Lifschey (Cleveland Orchestra), James Caldwell (Curtis Institute & Philadelphia Orchestra), John Mack (Cleveland Orchestra), William Bennett (San Francisco Symphony Orchestra) Joseph Robinson (New York Philharmonic), David Weber (Atlanta & Birmingham Symphonies), Ronald Roseman (New York Wind Quintet) and Peter Cooper (Colorado Symphony Orchestra).
Mr. Tam served as principal oboist of the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra (South Korea), guest principal oboist of the Pusan Philharmonic Orchestra (South Korea), the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (China), and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Bangkok Symphony Orchestra as well as having performed as soloist in many countries such as Korea, Thailand, Europe, the USA and in Hong Kong.
Mr. Tam appeared as guest conductor with many orchestras and wind bands including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Music Summer Orchestra (Organized by the Asian Youth Orchestra for their 20th Anniversary), the Bangkok Silpakorn Wind Orchestra (Thailand) and the Asian Wind Orchestra at the Korean International Band Festival.
In 2016 and 2017, Mr. Tam was invited by the RTHK Radio 4 to perform at Christmas in the Park with the Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia and was broadcast live on TV and radio from Kowloon Park. Mr. Tam has brought the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia, the Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia and the Hong Kong Youth Wind Philharmonia on many tours around the world, including performances in Macau, China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Austria. In the recent years Mr. Tam has brought the Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia excelled at the 7th Winter Band Festival 2015, achieving the “Gold Award”, “Best Set Piece Award” and “Champion of Open Division”. In the following year, the Band won the “Gold Award” in the Open Division of the 8thWinter Band Festival 2016 and the 10th Winter Band Festival 2018. Last year, the HKCWP also won the Champion of Open Division Group in 2019 Nie Er Youth Wind Band Art Week.
Mr. Tam currently serves as a faculty member of the Hong Kong Baptist University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). Mr. Tam is the director of the HKBU Wind Symphony, an Honorary Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), a resident conductor of EdUHK Symphonic Band, conductor of the Diocesan Boys’ School Wind Orchestra (since 2004) as well as orchestra and wind band conductors at various schools in Hong Kong. He also appeared as guest conductor with various ensembles and as adjudicator at music festivals throughout Asia.
